THE QUEUE OUTSIDE THE theatre door reached to the Winter Garden which surprised them both. People were stamping their feet to warm them up, and wrapping scarves even tighter around their necks when a sprightly wind blew off the Channel, even unwinding some and sending the owners running down the pier to catch them before they went over the railings.

‘I’m surprised there are so many people waiting to get in in this weather, aren’t you?’ Camille asked Richard.

‘I did notice that in the winter the ticket prices go down quite considerably to encourage people to buy them. It keeps the theatre open and the actors in work.’

She looked up at him and pulled a face. ‘You certainly know how to treat a girl.’ He laughed, then pulled her closer. She smiled to herself thinking that she could think of no better way to keep warm than by getting closer to Richard Owen.
